1 Introduction

Omnichannel retailing has become an essential part of modern business because now customers expect a seamless shopping experience across physical stores, websites, mobile applications, and digital marketing channels. Retail companies also increasingly rely on technology, analytics, customer experience, and digital merchandising to connect these shopping channels and improve business performance. As a result, career opportunities in omnichannel retailing have expanded beyond traditional store management into areas such as e-commerce operations, digital merchandising, retail analytics, and customer experience optimization.

To better understand these career opportunities, I researched three positions that closely align with the topics covered in this course: E-Commerce Coordinator at Clearly Filtered, Digital Sales Operations Analyst at GENTLE MONSTER, and Analyst, Ecommerce Experience at Skechers. These positions demonstrate how retailers use digital platforms, product data, analytics, and customer experience strategies to improve online sales and support omnichannel retail operations.

2 Summary of Job Postings

The E-Commerce Coordinator position at Clearly Filtered focuses on supporting the company’s Shopify storefront and Amazon sales channel. Responsibilities include updating website content, managing promotional campaigns, performing website quality assurance, monitoring inventory, supporting subscription operations, coordinating e-commerce projects, and maintaining Amazon listings. The position also emphasizes project coordination, reporting, and collaboration across marketing, design, and development teams.

The Digital Sales Operations Analyst position at GENTLE MONSTER is centered on digital merchandising, analytics, and operational performance. Responsibilities include analyzing product sales, building dashboards, monitoring website performance, optimizing product listings, managing inventory, supporting TikTok Shop operations, coordinating product launches, and conducting A/B testing to improve customer engagement and conversion rates. The role combines analytics with merchandising and operational decision-making.

The Analyst, Ecommerce Experience position at Skechers focuses on improving customer experience across Skechers.com and the mobile application. Responsibilities include monitoring conversion funnels, analyzing customer behavior, supporting A/B testing initiatives, evaluating product performance, preparing business reports, and identifying opportunities to improve the online shopping experience. The role works closely with product, UX/UI, merchandising, loyalty, CRM, and marketing teams to support data-driven decision making.

3 Skills and Knowledge Required

Although the three positions have different responsibilities, they share many common skills and qualifications. All three employers emphasize strong communication, organization, collaboration, and analytical thinking. Employees are expected to work across multiple departments while managing projects, interpreting data, and improving customer experiences.

Technical skills are also consistently emphasized throughout the postings. Clearly Filtered requires familiarity with Shopify, Amazon Seller Central, Excel, Google Sheets, and project management platforms while supporting online storefront operations and promotions. GENTLE MONSTER emphasizes Excel, Google Sheets, SQL, Shopify, TikTok Shop, Magento, dashboard creation, inventory management, and A/B testing to improve digital merchandising. Skechers highlights experience with Google Analytics 4 (GA4), customer journey analysis, experimentation, conversion optimization, and analytics platforms such as Quantum Metric and FullStory.

Across all three positions, employers value professionals who can analyze customer behavior, monitor product performance, optimize digital merchandising, support online retail operations, and communicate business insights effectively. The postings demonstrate that modern omnichannel retail careers require both technical expertise and strong interpersonal skills to improve customer experience and support data-driven business decisions.

4 Connection to This Course and the MSDM Program

This course provides practical experience that closely aligns with the qualifications requested in the three job postings. Through the Shopify assignments, I learned how to build and manage an online store, organize product categories, create product listings, customize a storefront, and understand how online merchandising supports the customer experience. These activities closely relate to the responsibilities described in the Clearly Filtered and GENTLE MONSTER positions, which emphasize Shopify, product management, digital merchandising, and e-commerce operations.

The CPP Farm Store consulting project also strengthened my understanding of omnichannel retailing. By analyzing competitors, product assortment, pricing strategies, customer motivations, and the customer journey, I gained experience thinking about retail strategy from both the customer and business perspectives. Developing customer journey maps and perceptual maps helped me understand how retailers use product positioning, merchandising, and customer experience to compete in today’s retail environment.

The job postings also emphasized analytics and data-driven decision making. Through this course, I became more familiar with concepts related to Google Analytics 4, online merchandising, product catalog management, and customer behavior analysis. While the course introduced these concepts, it also showed how data can be used to improve online store performance, customer engagement, and retail decision making.

In addiditon, the MSDM program provides additional preparation through courses in digital marketing, marketing analytics, consumer behavior, marketing research and business communication. Together, these courses help students develop both the technical and professional skills needed for careers in e-commerce, digital merchandising, customer experience, or retail analytics.

Overall, the combination of hands on Shopify projects, the CPP Farm Store consulting experience, and the MSDM curriculum provides a strong foundation for pursuing careers in omnichannel retailing and e-commerce.

5 Personal Career Reflection

After researching these career opportunities, I am most interested in pursuing a career in e-commerce operations or retail analytics. Among the three positions, the Digital Sales Operations Analyst role at GENTLE MONSTER interests me the most because it combines data analysis, digital merchandising, and business strategy. I enjoy working with technology and using data to solve business problems, and I find it interesting how retailers use customer behavior and product performance data to improve the online shopping experience.

This course has already helped me build a strong foundation by introducing Shopify, online merchandising, product catalog management, customer journey analysis, and omnichannel retail strategy. The Shopify assignments gave me hands-on experience creating and organizing an online store, while the CPP Farm Store consulting project allowed me to analyze a real retail business and recommend strategies to improve its omnichannel customer experience. These projects have provided practical examples that I can discuss during interviews and include in my professional portfolio.

Although I have developed many foundational skills, I would like to continue improving my knowledge of Google Analytics 4, SQL, data visualization, and advanced e-commerce analytics because these skills appeared repeatedly in the job postings I researched. I also plan to strengthen my LinkedIn profile, continue building my portfolio with course projects, and apply for internships or entry-level positions in e-commerce, retail analytics, or digital merchandising. By continuing to develop both my technical and communication skills I will be better prepared for a career in omnichannel retailing and e-commerce.
